You know, beef is not good for you! Well, not that bad, but not that great either. I just have a quick tip today for everyone concerning beef and beef dishes. You see, a few years ago, I was living in Atlanta and Beth and I started eating regularly at Ted’s Montana Grill. Their specialty is BUFFALO. As it turns out, this stuff is really good and is MUCH leaner than beef. Since then, we have used Bison for everything… hamburgers, steaks and pot roast. I think that the best are the burgers, but the others are not bad. I think that it is an excellent “choice”. The only drawback that I see is that it is kind of expensive. About 5.00 lb at Kroger here in Jackson. Here are the stats*:

So, eating Bison is like eating a little better than chicken, but getting all of the taste of beef. Next time you just can’t bring yourself to eat a chicken sandwich, try it out.

Now, this is totally unrelated to weight loss, but just bear with me. I was reading yesterday about navigation. Don’t ask why… just think I am a really smart guy and I sit around reading Popular Mechanics… so anyway…. reading about navigation of commercial airplanes. It seems that the way that the computer systems work is that they follow transponders on the ground. I know, this may not be a big shock to find this out, but what was shocking was that the article said that most of the time the planes are off course. Apparently, the way this works is that the planes fly for a while, then when they come to a transponder, they “course correct” or get back on course.
So, the point is- even if we get “off course” we can still get to where we are going by making small corrections.
O.K.- so it is kinda corny… but what do you want.
I just know that I can get off course just a little and I feel like just kicking myself. I need to always remember that getting back on course is just as easy as eating the right things the next meal. And just worrying about what I am going to eat today. Just today- not tomorrow or the next or the rest of the week- or the rest of my life- JUST TODAY!

moreThis was actually a new one for me. I had never done it before. Went for a one hour class… covered all the basics- chest, legs, curls, push-ups. We did squats and lunges with the body pump bar. It was not too bad, but at one point early in the hour my head turned purple… so I must have been straining somewhat.
Before the hour of body pump, I ran two miles… did it in about 22 minutes so I wasn’t going too too fast.
Every bit of what I did can be done at your own speed. Don’t feel like you have to run that fast. And body pump can be done with lower weights to fit your fitness level.
Work hard- Finish the drill!!!
moreI have opined in the past about taking things one day at a time. It seems to me, and this is defiantly one of my big downfalls- I know that sometimes I live WAY too much in the future. I sit around and worry about what is going to happen tomorrow. And I think to myself that this is too big, I can’t loose all this weight.
Well, there is this article in Time Magazine this week that made me think of this. Now, I am not compairing myself or my accomplishments by any means, but this article made me think of this exact thing. The article is about the moon landings in the 60’s. This past week was the 40th aniversery of the landing of Apollo 11. Well, they are talking about the astronauts and how they were chosen to go…. how they were recruted. The article states that they were chosen for their “coolness under pressure”. It says that when these guys were talking about or thinking about the enormatiy of what they were doing…. it served them best to not think about it. If they thought about it too much, then it would keep them from getting it done.
Now, this is a little bit different situation, but the result can be the same… don’t think about loosing the weight too much, if you think that OMG- I have to loose 100lbs…. then that is too much. You may not do anything, just take it one day at a time!!

moreI wanted to make some comments today on the state of our state… Mississippi. There was an article written by Jessica Watkins in the July 19th, 2009 Clarion-Ledger (Jackson MS) newspaper. In the article Jessica sites several studies about overweight kids in MS and how we need to help. I beleive this- I am not sure about the solution that Ms. Watkins offers, but that is another story for another blog.
I think she is right… we need to do SOMETHING about the weight problem that we all have here in MS.
When I was chosen for the People Magazine Weight Loss Challenge, I was chosen because I was from Miss… we all were, but I felt a need to show the rest of the U.S. that we were not incapable of changing that plight. I think that we can all change and find some solutions to the problem.
If some things are not changed, it WILL be as Jessica Watkins says in her article- adult life expectancy will decrease due to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and other diseases.
