Y’all… I have a great idea… let’s run in the mud!!

on August 26th, 2009 by Rob

O.K.- more on the mud run later.

I really do have a great idea to share today.

Reciently I was reading something and it made a suggestion. AND IT IS SO EASY!!! This is not just for people who would like to loose weight… it is for EVERYBODY!

It seems that in the past, when I have had a bad day, or I have been depressed about something (usually because I don’t feel good about myself and where I am)… I have a tendancy to think about all the negative things in my life… You know, the usual suspects- “I don’t have enough money”, “My mother is mad at me”, “I did something my wife doesn’t like, so she is miffed at me”, “my kids won’t listen to me”- You know the drill.

Well, it is time to start thinking about the good in life. The best way to do this is to write it down.

Write it down as it happens. Spend two minutes a day writting down good things that happen. “I saw this great show”, “Gee whiz, my foot does not hurt nearly as much as it did yesterday”, “Talked to my mother and we didn’t get in a fight”… whatever it is, just write it down.

Now, go out and get a notebook. Like a diary. And start…. the first entry can be “got this great notebook and I am going to write this great story”. The story is all the good things that happen to you.

Then when you are having a crappy day, it will be easy to not only go back and read about all the things that you feel thankful about, but you also get to focus on new good things to put in the book.

WATCH OUT!! There are SINNERS out there!

on August 19th, 2009 by Rob

I have had a sudden overwhelming urge to write this on my web-site today. You see, yesterday afternoon I was riding in my car and listening to a pod cast. The author of the pod cast mentioned a “company” that I was interested in learning more about. I made a mental note and went on about my business.

Well, this morning I got up and after checking the e-mail and doing other “regular job” stuff… I Googled the company name- that just happens to be VERY similar to mine. It is called Weigh Down Workshops.  WDW is a part of a larger organization called Remnant Fellowship.

On the surface, it seems O.K. This woman, the founder, named Gwen Shamblin has founded this program that basicly asks you to redirect your energy from eating to God. That is all fine and good… but upon further examination, some of the things that she says are not so good.

As far as I can tell, and let me be VERY clear here that this is just my opinion, this is at the very best a misguided attempt to help people with eating disorders deal with them by asking God to “take away the hunger”, and at the very worst a cult.

I want to make it VERY clear, that I, in no way shape form or fashion am associated with this “ministry” or it’s founder, Gwen Shambley.

Some of the things that are reported on the internet sites are so alarming it is hard to put into words. Once again, the basic premise of the Weigh Down Workshops is that if you are overweight, then you are a sinner and you do not have enough faith in God.

Well, needless to say, I do not beleive that this is true. I have said  in past posts on this site that “God will help you” and that I have been known to say some prayers over problems that I have had in the past. But the idea that they seem to be presenting leaves out a key element of my faith in God- and that is GRACE!!

Get some friends— to help!!!!

on August 9th, 2009 by Rob

I wanted to go back and re-visit the teamwork post again from the other day.

Friday morning I was talking to one of the people that has become a good friend of mine through this process. She started her weight loss trip (SO TIRED OF THE WORD JOURNEY) last summer- not long after I started. I was asking her what she felt like was the difference this time around. You see, she told me that she had tried to loose weight several times (just like I had).

She told me that the difference was having a mentor… or a group of mentors that helped her. Now… I was one of the mentors, and I can say from my experience, that it was just as valuable to be a mentor as it was to have one. It was great to have those people to lead, but it was great to have them push us along as well.

So, in order to be sucessful, at least from our (my friend’s and my) perspective- it is good to help others- this way you can help yourself.

Based on this set of facts, find a mentor- find a group of people to work out with- to eat well with (that is why I think Weight Watchers is so good)…. you can help some and be helped by others!

Quick Tip

on August 6th, 2009 by Rob

I wanted to tell everyone today about something that I started doing early last year when I started the People Magazine Weight Loss Challenge. I read somewhere about using a smaller plate to eat from.

The trick is to use a smaller (maybe a salad plate) plate to eat your meal. It kind of tricks you into thinking that you have more on your plate than you really do… because you are so used to using a full size dinner plate.

This has been really interesting. When I first started the practice, I was sceptical, but since I have been doing it a while- I really do think that it makes a difference in the amount of food that I have and subsequently, how full I feel later.

TEAMWORK!!!

on August 3rd, 2009 by Rob

One of the things that I have said over and over again, has been the value of the TEAM concept when it came to losing weight. I am convinced that there is absolutely NO other way that I would have been able to make it. The people that I worked out with- still work out with, keep me accountable and keep me focused by providing an element of competition. At the same time, I like to see my team mates do well too.

I have seen this time and time again- just think about Weight Watchers. The people that succeed come to the meetings and have contact with others that share the same experiences.
