Time to trim the calories!

on July 27th, 2010 by Rob

In an effort to curb childhood obesity rates…. some of our nations largest food companies have have said that they will trim 1.5 trillion calories out of their products by 2012. (Is there anyone else out there that is suspicious of Kraft and it being owned by Philip-Morris?)

These companies made their announcement through a trade association. Michelle Obama said that “This is precisely the kind of private sector commitment we need”- she is the one that started her own “Let’s Move” anti-obesity campaign.

Will this really work? Can we trust them?

A is for App—- not good! Get your kids moving!

on June 11th, 2010 by Rob

http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/144/a-is-for-app.html

Read this article in Fast Company magazine a few days ago…. actually from last month. Anyway- seems like there are lots of apps for the three R’s….

A very bright guy- Joe Friedlander of Hazen, ND- wrote to the editor of Fast Company and explained that (Sorry I can’t link to the letter— I have scoured the FC site for it and can’t find it) we are raising a whole new class of sedentary people.

His exact words are, “… sedentary lifestyle encouraged by a proliferation fo digital devices designed to have us sit and stare—- our fingers are the last things moving. I … bemoan the ever-growing percentage of children that literally tip the scales after years of snacking and sitting in from of a screen. If we don’t get our children moving soon, in 20 years, we’ll have a population full of digitally literate diabetics.”

Well said Joe—- what do you think? Do you work hard to get your kids moving??

How’s your gratitude?

on May 9th, 2010 by Rob

I would say that I am a glass half full kinda guy.  But, that glass can get half empty in a real hurry if things don’t go just right.

O.K.- let’s just say that I go and hop up on the scale. I have been working out all week and eating well and I am looking for a 4-6 pound loss for the week…. maybe this is a little ambitious, but certainly not out of the question.  So- I hop and low and behold, a two pound gain. SHIT!!! ….Well, SHIT!! That blows!!! I wasted all that time, effort and mental anguish. Not even to mention that I didn’t have that cake!!  So now what?

The thing is… it is SO easy for me to end up having a bad day. So easy for me to say SCREW IT- I think I’ll have some wings… not gonna make any difference anyway. SO easy for me to stop trying… stop fighting. Then, what happens the next morning??? It is just a little bit harder for me to get up and get going… a little harder for me to get to the gym.

This is the story of my life. And it doesn’t even have to be the scale. I mean, I could get in a fight with my wife… which I might add happened yesterday at 5am… I mean, WTF??? How do you do that at 5a.m.? BTW- I love her and think she is great- she just pissed me off momentarily… Or, I could have something happen at work and I could just EASILY move into a Twinkies/Doritos bender… I mean, this is NOT a stretch.

But then something happens. And this is the subject of my post today… something says to me that I need to thank God for all the things that I have. These two little boys that God has entrusted to me…. it is an awesome responsibility.  Sure, I would love to have a nicer house, a better car than the crappy civic that I drive. I could have a better job and make more money and be more importaint… but if I want to stay on this path…. if I want to do my best every day… if I want to attack every day and make it the best that I can…. I have to show some gratitude!!!

Do you let the shitty things in life get the best of you?? Or do you roll with the punches? Get back up? Dust yourself off? Keep going? Work harder? Try harder? Eat better?

It is so easy to NOT move in the direction that makes our lives better. What do you do to flip that switch and CHANGE?

New!!! BMI calculator!!

on April 1st, 2010 by Rob

To figure your BMI- Body Mass Index- do the following:

Divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and then multiply by 703. (I have absolutely no idea what the significance of 703 is) – of course if you are a lot smarter than I am… which is not a huge feat, then you can just look up one of about a hundred thousand of them on the web.

Anyway- the results will tell you what you need to know:

- Higher than 25 is overweight

- Higher than 30 is obese

But, here is the kicker- it is less accurate in people that are very muscular…. so just keep telling yourself that!!

Weight Loss Motivation

on February 24th, 2010 by Rob

I have copied and pasted a post from Heather @fitinto.ca  —–because I think that it is so spot on.  Read and enjoy- visit her blog too at:  http://fitinto.ca/

To reach your fitness or weight loss goals, you need two types of motivation.

“Away from” motivation and “towards” motivation…

…as Renee Stephens calls them. (And I couldn’t agree more.)

Renee does an incredible job of explaining the two types of motivation in Episode 1 of her Inside Out Weight Loss podcast series, but I will try and do her justice by summarizing for you here.

“Away from” motivation is often what gets you started. It’s what you have too much of in your life, and want to avoid in the future. For example, maybe you want to move away from requiring prescription medication daily. Or maybe you want to move away from having to purchase larger sizes each season when you go shopping. Or maybe you simply want to move away from feeling bad about yourself.

We need “away from” motivation. It helps us to realize that it’s time for change. And that’s a really good thing.

The problem with “away from” motivation is that it is relatively easy to satisfy (though, it can still be a huge deal). The point is that you can do better. If it is your goal to stop requiring prescription meds, and you make the changes in your life necessary to do that, your goal has been met. You might be healthier, but I’m almost positive that you could do more at that point to further improve your life. The same goes for the other examples. If, when you go shopping next season, you need the same size as the previous season, you’ve met your goal. But could you do more? Of course. And if your “away from” motivation is to stop feeling bad about yourself, you’re likely to stop trying to make change in your life as soon as you feel a little better. Will you be at your best? Probably not. But you’ve met your goal – and that might make you think that it’s time to settle.

That’s where “towards” motivation comes in. It takes over when “away from” motivation stops working. For example, when you stop needing to purchase larger sizes, your “towards” motivation kicks in to keep you moving forward on the path towards bigger goals. Maybe you want to have a certain look, or be a specific dress size, or have a specific-sized waist. Feel free to dream. It’s okay if it seems like a big goal – that’s what “towards” motivation is all about.

The two motivations work best when they’re used together. And they work even better when you’re clear about what they are.

So take a moment to think about it. What’s your “away from” motivation? What’s your “towards” motivation? How do they interact? How will you know when you’ve made the shift from “away from” to “towards”? Do you have any other thoughts on motivation?

Feel the Fear!!! Do it anyway!

on September 30th, 2009 by Rob

On March 3rd, 1943 an air raid siren sounded in London. The citizens of London knew they were at war with Germany and that a retaliation attack was possible. But with nothing but the sound of the siren, panic and mass hysteria was the result. 1500 people tried to get down the steps of the Bethnal Green train station tunnel for protection. Londoners went into the “Tube Stations” to escape the bombs. One lady, carrying her small baby, tripped on the stairs and fell. Within a few seconds 300 people were crushed into the tiny stairwell. The chaos lasted less than 15 minutes, but 172 people were dead at the scene, with one more dying the next day.

No German bombers came that night. The largest number killed by any single bomb during the blitz in England was 68. The crush at Bethnal Green was the largest loss of civilian life in the UK in World War II. But bombs didn’t kill those people – fear did.

I have written about this in the past. What we need to realize is that most of our fears are really nothing to be fearful about. There is a saying in Alanon- it is- “I can’t, God can, I think I’ll let him.” To me, this means that we need to let God take care of everything. That does not mean that we lay in our beds, waiting for life to happen to us- we have to go out and make things happen, but it does mean that God will take care of us along the way.

Don’t be afraid of the unknown… it’s probably not that bad.
